The value of multi-modal trips

In transit lingo, “multi-modal” trips are those that use different modes to get to a destination. A common version is bike to bus/subway/rail, either taking the bike on the vehicle or locking it before one gets on. Today I had a wonderful trip that was multi-modal by accident. The “out” trip was planned as multi-modal: I live in Berkeley and...

Reflections on 900 miles on a bicycle

[I wrote this back in August of 2010] Well, I’ve been back for a week, so it seemed like time to write reflections on my Portland to Berkeley bicycle trip. Why? Why did I do it? Was it turning 50, the old “mid-life crisis” reaction? Maybe, but probably only a small amount. I’m pretty satisfied...

Berkeley Student Food Collective now open

A new food cooperative opened on November 15 in Berkeley. The Berkeley Student Food Collective is open to anyone, student or not. Both members and non-members can shop, members receive a discount in exchange for work hours. I’ve shopped there a couple times, and the store is quite well stocked. It’s just a small storefront, so don’t expect to get...

Drive 55 MPH on Spare the Air days

With the batch of Spare the Air days in the San Francisco Bay Area in the last few weeks, I came up with an idea that would probably save a lot more gas than trying to get people to carpool and take transit (not that I’m suggesting we stop this, but I’m not sure how many people really switch on...

AAPT meeting in Portland and my bike trip home

I’m leaving today for the American Association of Physics Teachers summer meeting in Portland, Oregon. I’ll be presenting a workshop at the meeting (see next post), then riding my bicycle to Eugene then down the coast back to Berkeley. You can follow my cycling exploits here: www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=RrzKj&doc_id=7183&v=V

Welcome…

…to my blog. I write about science education, radical/liberal politics, accessible web design, web support for small “brick and mortar” businesses, and a little about my life. Since I write about such a broad spectrum of topics, you may want to click the category link (on the right) of the topic you are most interested in.

Blogging my SF-San Luis Obispo bike trip on crazyguyonabike.com

I’m riding a six-day bicycle tour from San Francisco (well, Daly City BART, actually) to San Luis Obispo. I found a great web site for posting bike trips, CrazyGuyOnABike.com/leetramp. You can follow my trip there. I’m riding a great touring bike, the Surly “Long Haul Trucker.” The bike is not light, but it’s sturdy I’m fully equipped with Ortleib panniers...

Hayward’s “D Street” fault creep, curb offset evidence erased

Sadly, improvements in city streets can wipe out geologic evidence. D Street has been a great field trip stop to see earthquake fault creep, and appears in many guidebooks and web sites. But in 1997, Hayward repaved the road, including the sidewalks (they all needed it). When they repaved it, they straightened all the curb lines, thereby erasing the evidence...

A short poem about love

In my life, every time that I’ve found it, love appears in a different way sometimes it’s right where I’m looking other times in an fog shrouded bay How love is is also quite varied erotic or gentle or wild I don’t know how the next one will appear old soul or youthful child For me love is like chocolate...
